How to commission a picture

This will vary depending on the nature of the commission. For a straight forward A4 drawing of someone's pet it can be as simple as posting or emailing me a clear photograph. I then produce the picture, email it to the client for approval, accept payment & post the picture off to the client.

For a larger more expensive commission this would usually involve meeting the client to discuss the picture and take my own photographs. Below is a general guide as to the commissioning process.

The first stage is either to email me or preferably to give me a call to discuss the picture that you have in mind. From here we will establish as to whether or not a meeting is necessary or practical.

The second stage is to establish the size of the picture & the medium used to produce it. We will then discuss the composition.

If no meeting is to take place the client will need to provide me with clear photographs of the subject. From these I will produce a rough composition indicating the size, medium & price of the finished picture. Upon approval of this by the client I will then begin work on the picture upon receipt of a 25% deposit. (see below for more information on price & payment methods)

If a meeting has been arranged I will look at any photographs the client may have & take my own pictures if necessary. The client will then be provided with a rough as above.

The final stage is the approval of the finished picture by the client. This will be either by email or a viewing of the work. Upon acceptance of the finished picture the remaining balance will then be paid by the client. The picture will then be delivered to the client by the most appropriate means.

Size & Price Guide

I am happy to work at any size but people often find it easier to use the standard sizes of A4, A3, A2, and A1 as a starting point.

The actual proportions of the picture will depend on the final composition.

The final price of a picture will be agreed with the individual client taking into account the amount of time the picture will take to produce. A small detailed picture may well cost more than a simple larger one due to it taking longer.

Below is a guide to size and price costs for a head and shoulders portrait.
